I was recently at PPPJ'09 and one of the more interesting things I learned is from Ben Stephenson, from the University of Calgary. He said that a good way to teach introductory programming courses is to make the assignments visual, especially for recursion (he has a poster on this topic at a different conference). Something to think about.
