What's wrong with online resume submission?

Tags: work November 19, 2009

I finally managed to give my supervisor a full draft of my thesis Tuesday night. That means I finally have some spare time. Since I hope to graduate soon, the highest priority item is finding work. If anybody knows of a well paying advanced software development job in a good working environment in the Toronto area, I'm all ears =)

Regardless, I have used the free time to apply for open positions at various companies. All of the websites took my nicely formatted resume, and produced garbled plain text output. Hence, my rhetorical question in the title of the post. I don't understand what the HR and recruiting departments are thinking. Maybe the formatting of the resume really doesn't matter. There must be an explanation, although I certainly don't have it.
