EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DB2 BUFFERING
The DB2 Buffer Manager is the "cross-roads" of the DB2 database systems. Rows of DB2 Tables and Indices either: have been read, and currently reside in virtual storage with electronic speed of access; be stored in group bufferpools in a data sharing configuration; or be on a direct access storage volume requiring the Buffer Manager to call the MVS/DFP Media Manager to perform a read operation. Differences in access time make a proper understanding of the Buffer Manager, and the economic and performance issues of buffering, critical to those responsible for configuring, analysing and tuning a DB2 production system.
In Versions 3, 4, and 6, DB2 has taken major steps forward in providing more powerful buffering, as well as the capacity for dynamically altering the configuration of the bufferpools. This discussion reviews the role of the Buffer Manager in DB2, and explores the new opportunities to balance the economics and performance of this critical resource manager.
Chuck Hoover has over 38 years of information processing experience with IBM and Compuware. He has specialized on data base for the past 29 years, with 19 years of involvement with the relational model, and practical experience with DB2 since Version 1 Release 1 in 1983.
DRDA CONNECTIVITY FROM A WORKSTATION TO DB2 OS/390
A brief expose will be given of the DRDA Connectivity parameters, their meaning, their mapping among the various pieces of DRDA participants and their performance effect. This presentation will only discuss one type of connectivity namely SNA connectivity between DB2 Connect PE on a Client machine such as Windows95 or NT and DB2 OS/390. This is known as 2-tier connectivity.
Another form of 2-tier connectivity that accesses DB2 OS/390 through a gateway machine will also be discussed. This presentation will also discuss SNA connectivity between DB2 OS/390 and DB2 Connect EE on an Application Server machine such as NT or RS/6000. This is known as 3-tier connectivity.
