ABSTRACTS

INTERGALAGTIC DATABASE ADMINISTRATION: STRUGGLING WITH COMPLEXITY
The DBA's life is getting more and more complex. Why? Rapid changes in technology. Larger, more diverse, more distributed enterprises. More work and fewer people to do it. Database technology and capabilities are advancing with ever-increasing speed. It takes an "intergalactic" DBA to overcome these obstacles. One that can navigate from database to database, traversing complex, interconnected systems without getting sucked into a black hole. This presentation will examine the new features of RDBMS products and discuss the impact these features have on DBAs. Topics covered include:

  • DBMS-Coupled Application Logic: dealing with stored procedures, triggers, and user-defined functions
  • Heterogeneous environments: databases, networks, and operating systems
  • ?Universal? Servers and Object/Relational Database Management
  • Data Warehousing and the trend toward VHDB
  • Reactive vs. proactive management
  • Managing change in a distributed environment
  • Rapid acceptance of new technology: (e.g., Windows NT and the web)
Craig S. Mullins is Vice President of Marketing and Operations for the database tools division of PLATINUM technology, inc. He has extensive experience in all facets of database systems development, including developing and teaching DB2 classes, systems analysis and design, database and system administration, and data analysis.

EXPERIENCES USING DB2 UDB EEE IN BUILDING LARGE SCALE BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE SOLUTIONS
In order to continue providing personalized customer service and innovative products to its customers, the Bank of Montreal has created a large scale data mart called the Customer Knowledge Database. The 1.8 terabyte datamart built on DB2 UDB EEE consolidates highly detailed information on the bank's customers.
This presentation will include challenges we faced and experiences we gained in building such a large datamart. It will also cover more detailed experiences in the capacity planning and database administration.

DB2 TUNING FOR ERP SQL APPLICATIONS LIKE PEOPLESOFT
Many organizations are purchasing strategic software packages like PeopleSoft, SAP and Baan. These are suites of application that run on many platforms including DB2 for OS/390. However, they are not optimized for DB2for OS/390, and tuning is necessary. The presenter will talk of his experiences in tuning PeopleSoft at client sites. The emphasis will be on what can and can't be tuned. Details on tuning buffer pools, indexes, and other tuning opportunities will be discussed.
Martin Hubel, an independent consultant, has worked extensively with DB2 since 1985. Martin develops and teaches advanced DB2 courses and is recognized as a leading authority in the field. He has been using DB2 Universal Database for several years and participated in two beta test programs. He is a member of the IBM Gold Consultants Program.

DB2 FOR OS/390 V5 POST-GA/V6 UPDATE: V6 GOODIES IN V5!
Recognizing that most customers will not be installing V6 until after the millennium, several appealing enhancements are being retrofit into V5. Hari will update you on post-GA V5 enhancements that have been delivered or that are intended. Including:

  • Prepare cache enhancements (performance)
  • GBP duplexing (availability)
  • Optimizer improvements like improved index screening and predicate push down (performance)
  • Java/JDBC/SQLJ (function and performance)
  • Deferred Write and CASTOUT algorithms (performance)
  • Update of partitioning key (function)
Also, Hari will talk about some of the V6 enhancements that he didn't talk about previously, which are not being retrofit.
