Leveraging Information Management on Demand: Today and Tomorrow
Platform: DB2 Cross Platform - Audience: All

Information Management is the foundation of every successful enterprise. To remain competitive, you know that for each of your organizations and enterprises, it is essential to leverage ALL the information in your enterprise and beyond. The past 40 years of IT investments have left most of your companies with an enterprise computing infrastructure that is heterogeneous, widely distributed and increasingly complex. This presentation will review the technology changes in computing that will affect the work you do, and explore the initiatives in IBM's information management technology that correspond to those changes, especially in the areas of performance, scalability and availability. We will also discuss innovations in IBM's DB2 family of products that will make it faster and easier to do application development and will provide simpler to use but more powerful mechanisms to manage the tremendous growth in digitized information. Changes that you will see include using autonomic technology to manage this data, extending traditional data management techniques to support new forms of content from many different sources, and exploiting XML, J2EE, business process integration, and web services to support new models for building and executing applications. This presentation will cover a quick review of what is available in these areas today, and a view of IBM's On Demand software strategy, technology, and product directions for the future.

Fiona Gleeson is the Director of Development, DB2 UDB for z/OS and OS/390.Fiona has management responsibility for the team that designs, develops and supports DB2. In this role, she provides leadership for software product strategy, development, and support. During her career, Fiona has held a variety of management and technical roles across IBM's Software Group; primarily in the Data Management Solutions division of Software Group. Prior assignments include development responsibility for DB2 UDB for Linux, Unix and Windows, and development of business intelligence software in the ExtractTranformLoad(ETL) space.

Leon Katsnelson is a Senior Development Manager at the IBM Toronto Lab. Leon is a recognized expert in the areas of DB2 Application Development and DB2 Connect. Leon has 18 years of experience with complex database and network systems. Over the years he has helped many customers to integrate DB2 into their solutions. Leon frequently presents his experiences at user group meetings and industry conferences.

DB2 Memory: Impacts on Application Performance
Platform: DB2 for zOS - Audience: All

SQL tuning is very important to application performance. But you can have a perfectly tuned SQL statement and still not have good application performance. SQL tuning is one way to good performance. You must also consider the database design and how memory is being used. This presentation discusses the issues regarding memory and the objects that use it.

Application Design for High Performance
Platform: DB2 for zOS - Audience: All

We will cover many alternatives to our normal applications in order to achieve performance. Many techniques to minimize overhead and locking will be explored. We will also take a look at techniques coding efficient SQL and minimizing the amount of data we bring back to process in our applications via optimal predicates, less repetition and better use of indexes. We will also discuss converting legacy programs efficiently.

Susan Lawson is an internationally recognized consultant and lecturer with a strong background in system and database administration. In the past, she has been an IBM Data Sharing advocate where she supported a variety of large DB2 customers. She provided technical expertise for migration to DB2 Data Sharing in a Parallel Sysplex environment, as well as troubleshooting performance problems during post-implementation. She currently works with several clients to help development, implement and tune some of the world’s largest and most complex DB2 databases. Her other activities have included authoring articles and presenting at user group meetings.

The Ties That BIND DB2
Platform: DB2 for zOS - Audience: All

No matter how long programmers have worked with DB2 for z/OS and OS/390, they still ask me to tell them the difference between a plan and a package — and what in the heck a collection is. I wrote several columns on this topic so I could just point them to DB2 Magazine. Well one column became two, and two morphed into three. And, now this topic has become a new presentation.

An all new: “Things I Wish They’d Told Me, Best of Parts 1 - 10”
Platform: DB2 for zOS - Audience: All

Bonnie continues the tradition of delivering content-rich sessions with this new offering. War stories, analogies, and examples are used to explain how good (and bad) techniques for application design, object design, program logic and SQL impact application performance. The session topics include: Little-known V8 issues for developers; Coding alternative SQL syntax for performance improvement; Deciphering DB2-SPEAK.

Bonnie Baker, a consultant with Bonnie Baker Corporation, uses her experiences as a programmer, systems analyst, DBA, instructor and consultant to bring a hands-on, from the trenches perspective to this seminar to provide real-life solutions to real-world problems with DB2. She is a frequent speaker at the U.S., European, and Canadian DB2 Technical Conferences and has spoken at SHARE, IDUG, and many DB2 User Groups. She has won the IDUG Best Speaker Award 5 times and is a member of the IDUG Speakers’ Hall of Fame. She writes the “Programmers Only” column in DB2 Magazine. She is also an IBM DB2 Gold Consultant.

SQL Performance Under the Microscope
Platform: DB2 for zOS - Audience: All

Fact #1: SQL can make DB2 fly or crawl.
Fact #2: Large performance gains are achieved by tuning SQL.
In this presentation, we look at how you can make SQL fly. We take an in-depth look at predicate processing, how joins can be made more efficient and also how stage 1 can improve and stage 2 predicates can impact performance. Lastly we discuss DB2 EXPLAIN and how to find SQL problems that cannot be spotted in the PLAN_TABLE

Maria Sarikos has been working with DB2 for over 12 years. Maria worked as an Independent Consultant for a number of years specializing in DB2 Performance Tuning and Database Design before joining PLATINUM technology and subsequently Computer Associates.

Capturing and using dynamic SQL statements
Platform: DB2 for zOS - Audience: All
