TABLE DESIGN FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE

This presentation will discuss many issues surrounding alternative table designs and performance. We will look at many different alternatives to help design tables for the best performance possible for the type of application process. There are many issues to consider for high volume insert and update transactions, and a balancing act to be achieved for responsiveness to readers. Table issues such as denormalization, non-column attributes, indicator columns, repeating columns, derived data, aggregated columns, table flipping, identify columns, surrogate keys, horizontal and vertical partitioning. We will also look at issues with designing VLTBs (Very Large Tables) and XVLTBs (eXtremely Large Tables) – the rules have changed!

Susan Lawson is an internationally recognized consultant and lecturer with a strong background in system and database administration, and is a principal with YL&A. In the past, she has been an IBM Data Sharing advocate where she supported a variety of large DB2 customers. She provided technical expertise for migration to DB2 Data Sharing in a Parallel Sysplex environment, as well as troubleshooting performance problems during post-implementation. She currently works with several clients to help development, implement and tune some of the world's largest and most complex DB2 databases. Her other activities have included authoring articles, presenting at user group meetings (where she has won best speaker awards), and providing technical editing for trade journals. She is an IBM GOLD Consultant for DB2 and S/390, and is an IBM Certified DBA for DB2 UDB Version 7 for OS/390. She is one of the authors of "DB2 Answers!" published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill, "DB2 High Performance Design and Tuning" published by Prentice-Hall, and "DB2 UDB for OS/390 Version 7 Certification Guide" published by Prentice-Hall.


DB2 MATERIALIZED QUERY TABLES

Since we first introduced the Automatic Summary Table (AST) feature in DB2, several enhancements have been put into the product. We now have a very powerful feature to improve query performance in the latest version of DB2.
We now refer to this feature as Materialized Query Tables (MQTs) to also cover general materialized queries that do not contain aggregation. The tricky part is to be able to define good MQTs or ASTs that can be used by your queries. This session tells you what works and what does not work when DB2 tries to match the queries with the MQTs or ASTs. It also gives you an update on the usability enhancements that have been added to make this powerful performance feature even better.

SQL PROCEDURES: "THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY"

TD Bank Financial Group recently reviewed and implemented developing Stored Procedures using DB2's Stored Procedure Builder and SQL/PSM. This presentation documents the Bank's trials, tribulations, tips and potential pitfalls to give the attendee a firm understanding of this facility.
