TRACE ANALYSIS OF STORED PROCEDURES, TRIGGERS AND UDF'S
Stored procedrues, triggers, and user defined functions (UDFs) have expanded the reach and capabilities of DB2 for OS/390. Stored procedures, triggers, and user defined functions provide powerful functionality, but also imply important considerations for DB2 performance analysis. Fortunately for the DB2 performance analyst, DB2 for OS/390 offers considerable statistics, performance, and accounting trace information.
This presentation will begin with a brief review of stored procedures, triggers, and user defined functions, and how they are defined and implemented. The presentation will then look at the execution life cycle of these functions, examining what events occur, and in what sequence. Next, the presentation will focus on the performance analysis and management of stored procedures, triggers, and user defined functions. This will include looking at what data is available in the form of statistics, performance, and accounting trace data, and how to analyze the performance repercussions of using stored procedures, triggers, and user defined functions. This presentation is for all DB2 users interested in performance.


A LOOK AT DB2 AND OS/390 WORKLOAD MANAGER
OS/390 features a unique workload priority management component called Workload Manager. Workload Manager handles system resource allocation and prioritization for OS/390 subsystems and applications. Also, one of the major exploiters of Workload Manager on OS/390 is DB2.
This presentation will first discuss the major constructs, components, and concepts of Workload Manager. The presentation will then look at how DB2 UDB OS/390 exploits the facilites of Workload Manager. This will include a discussion of DB2 Distributed applications, and Application Environments for the support of Workload Manager managed Stored Procedures. Some general recommendations on Workload Manager and DB2 will be offered.

Ed Woods has 20 years of experience in the data processing industry, primarily in the area of DB2, IMS, and MVS systems programming. He has been a Systems Engineer with Candle Corporation for eight years, supporting the Candle DB2, IMS, and e-Business product lines. UNDERSTANDING THE DB2 FOR Z/OS SORT
The correct ordering of result sets is a fundamental function within the relation data model.
Sorting is also used for two joining access paths and for eliminating duplicate rows when requested by the DISTINCT and UNION clauses.
Finally, sorting is involved with GROUP BY activities. Understanding how the details of how DB2 sort works is important for the proper configuration of the sort work area, the sort work files’ buffers and the physical disk workspace to support sorting.

Chuck Hoover is semi-retired and works as a consulting database engineer specializing in DB2 for OS/390 in the areas of data base design, capacity planning, performance forecasting, SQL optimization and system tuning. He has written a series of DB2 books and white papers for, and distributed by, the Compuware Corporation.


ANALYZING DB2 PERFORMANCE DATA WITH OLAP
DB2 UDB provides a wealth of tuning information through snapshot and event monitors. This data is used by almost every performance monitoring strategy. In addition, DB2 OLAP Server has many functions to analyze data, why not use it for DB2 performance data. DB2 V8 will allow the option of storing monitor output directly into DB2 tables.
This presentation will show how the power of DB2 OLAP functions with their application to DB2 performance issues. The use of related features will be shown for use in reporting using an application familiar to every DBA: performance.

He has been using DB2 Universal Database on Unix, Windows and OS/2 since 1993 and has participated in several beta test programs for these platforms.
