ABSTRACTS

A SIMPLE APPROACH TO INDEX REDESIGN
Many applications enter production with sub-optimal indexing strategies. Regardless of the reasons for this, performance can be substantially improved if indexes are redesigned to better match the needs of the application. This presentation will discuss a number of ways to redesign indexes without affecting application integrity. Examples will come from the presenter's experience.

Martin Hubel is an independent consultant and has worked extensively with DB2 since 1985. Martin develops and teaches advanced DB2 courses and is recognized as a leading authority in the field. He has been using DB2 Universal Database on Unix, Windows and OS/2 since 1993 and has participated in several beta test programs for these platforms. He is a member of the IBM Gold Consultants Program, and on the editorial board of the IDUG Solutions Journal.

"..as on a darkling plain..": DB2 FOR OS/390 PERFORMANCE RISK REDUCTION
An unfunny thing happened on my way to the world trade center September 11, 2001, so my focus here is on dealing with some risk factors:

  • V5+ dynamic vs static considerations and options for performance, availability and manageability
  • V6 parallel copy and recover of tablespaces and indexes and rebuild - and the dasd technology option/alternative
  • V6+ performance estimating considerations and db2 estimator
  • V6 performance and identification baselines and monitor/trace verification before there is a problem
  • full size production dry runs of conversion, new and modified processes to simplify and speed the real run.
Hari Shanmugadhasan, President, Hari's Database Analysis and Consulting Ltd. and previously 23 years at IBM Canada Ltd, during which he was a frequent speaker at this DB2 user group. He has also been a presenter and panelist at DB2 Technical Conference and IDUG events. He most recently presented at the June 21 meeting of the TRIDEX DB2 Users Group in New York City.
(The quotation in the title is from "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold.)

INSIDE DB2'S BACKUP AND RECOVERY
DB2 UDB offers a vast number of tunable parameters for both backup and recovery. This presentation will provide a detailed description of the different tunable parameters and how they will affect performance of backup and recovery.
A comparison of the utilities available on DB2/390 versus those available on DB2 UDB will also be discussed. New backup and recovery features made available in version 7.1 of DB2, such as incremental backup and parallel recovery, will also be covered.

Dale McInnis is a senior developmemt manager for DB2 at the IBM Toronto Lab.

INTERNET FOUNDATIONS - DATABASE
This is an updated presentation on the ever rapidly changing Internet database technology. The overwhelming growth of data has rapidly changed the face of technology and shed new light on the importance and the use of data. In the past few years this technology, from a business point of view, has seen some businesses crumble, while others have retrenched into successful Internet businesses. This presentation is intended to describe the Web Services specification and how it solves many Internet application integration problems.

Mike Sniezek’s career in Information Technology began in 1976. He is currently a Database Tools Evangelist with BMC Software, and has worked with relational technology since 1984, specializing in distributed technology as a consultant and lecturer. Mike has extensive knowledge of database architecture with expert knowledge in Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft SQLserver and DB2. Mike has lectured throughout the world presenting at the International and local Database conferences on topics related to relational database architecture, distributed technology, and the Internet.
