ABSTRACTS

DB2 APPLICATION PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS: ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
DB2 provides a comprehensive set of subsystem and application traces. The DB2 Accounting traces provide essential information on application execution and performance. Often the achievement of good application performance is a matter of having a sound performance methodology, and asking the right questions.
This presentation will consider the logical tuning methodology for analyzing DB2 application performance. By asking the appropriate questions this presentation will demonstrate a logical methodology for isolating DB2 application performance problems.

Ed Woods has 20 years of experience in the data processing industry, primarily in the area of DB2, IMS, and MVS systems programming. He has been a Systems Engineer with Candle Corporation for eight years, supporting the Candle DB2, IMS, and e-Business product lines.
Ed has presented at IDUG North America, IDUG Europe, Guide, Share, CMG, and at regional DB2 User groups on DB2 technical and performance topics. In addition, he has presented as a part of Candle Performance Road Shows, and has published articles in Candle Computer Report and IDUG Solutions Journal. In May of 2000, he was selected ‘Best Overall Speaker’ at IDUG North America in Dallas.

DB2 AND E-BUSINESS: NEW PERFORMANCE CHALLENGES
The Internet has been referred to as the worlds largest client server application.
The Internet and e-Business dominates numerous facets of data processing, and it is just as important to the DB2 and MVS expert. Attend this session to learn the essentials of the World Wide Web and e-Business technology, specifically as it relates to the DB2 professional.

This session will cover the critical concepts and terminology of the World Wide Web and e-Business, specifically as it is implemented with DB2 UDB and OS/390. The presentation will then look at the performance and availability concerns of this technology. A performance analysis methodology will be discussed. Available performance information will be reviewed. This presentation is for all users interested in e-Business and DB2.

WHAT'S NEW WITH DB2 COMMON CLIENT
Leon will discuss the new features of the latest version of DB2 Connect.

Leon Katsnelson is Manager, DB Connect Development. He is a regular IDUG presenter and panelist, and has been voted amongst the top 10 speakers at past IDUG North American Conferences.

ADVENTURES IN DBA-LAND
Hari will discuss opportunistic strategies for avoiding problems with usability, availability and performance, including:

  • Killer ZPARMS - to catch criminal code quicker
  • One to One Relationships - to avoid DBD lock contention
  • "Wild carding" - to generate commands, ALTERs and utility control cards via SQL
  • "VANS" - Value Adding Naming Standards - to simplify your life
  • The connection between standards and some Star Trek episodes
  • Things to do while waiting for the Logical Model log jam to break
  • Paving the production way with full size dry runs
  • DB2 for OS/390 V5, V6 and V7 enhancements that relate to the above strategies

Hari Shanmugadhasan is a Certified Consulting I/T Specialist with IBM Canada, specializing in DB2 UDB for OS/390.
