Our Story

I met Paul on July 8, 1979 at my first meeting with the volunteers of Toronto Area Gays, a peer counseling Bruce, Paul, Tom Stewart and David Kelleyand support group. As an experienced counselor, Paul invited me to observe him working the phones. The mentorship quickly progressed to something more, and soon thereafter, we began our journey together as “official lovers”.

The early 80s was a fascinating time to be gay in Toronto with incredible challenges. Crucial small steps were being taken in an emerging and no-longer-invisible community. In addition to Toronto Area Gays, Paul & I were also active in the fundraising Gay Community Appeal, the gay community choir, and a couples support and social group.

Paul was extremely charismatic, attractive, and outgoiBruce at the 25th Stonewall Anniversary (1994)ng with an enviable zest for life that was evident to all who had the good fortune to know him. Paul & I enjoyed a loving and supportive relationship, but it had its own unique challenges. In 1985 we decided to go our separate ways. Paul entered into another loving relationship that continued to his passing from complications due to AIDS on March 21, 1994.

We continued to be good friends over the years, and I had the privilege of marching with Paul’s photo (one of my favorites and the first one I had taken of Paul shortly after we met) at the 25th anniversary parade of the Stonewall Riots in the NYC in 1994.
